We have been home educating since 2013, giving us more than a decade of firsthand experience navigating the many ways families can take an active role in directing their children’s education—including educating children with unique abilities.

​

Our own journey began before homeschooling. Our children have experienced public, private, Montessori, and Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) schools in Okinawa, Japan while we were stationed there.

 

Those experiences, along with our faith have helped shape our belief that parents know their children best and that education should make room for each child’s individual gifts, needs, interests, and goals.

Since beginning our homeschool journey, we have used nearly every kind of educational approach along the way: boxed curriculum, traditional textbooks, online courses, virtual schools, private-school umbrella programs, community classes, tutors, hands-on learning, travel, and curriculum we created ourselves.

We have also successfully graduated a Florida home-educated student and continue to navigate the high-school and transition years with our family.
